Description
The Source Audio C4 Synth Pedal unites all the sound creation tools of a classic Eurorack modular synthesizer and packages them in a compact and easy to use effects pedal for guitar, bass and keyboards with lightning fast response and tracking ability, six on board presets (128 via MIDI) and huge tone sculpting options through the Neuro editor.
The C4 has a simple four knob layout, a preset toggle switch and an 'alt' switch, the input/sense knob adjusts the volume level of the input signal (a calibration function is included to ensure the best possible interaction between your instrument and the C4), press the alt switch and the same knob adjusts sensitivity, how reactive the envelope filter is to the incoming signal (if you like to play hard but still want a smoother more relaxed envelope filter, you can turn down the sensitivity). The mix/vol knob adjusts the balance between the dry and affected wet signal, press the alt switch and it adjusts the output volume of the pedal. The control 1 and 2 knobs adjust different parameters based on the preset selected (gain, bass, filter depth, envelope speed etc.). The preset toggle switch selects between three presets per bank, press the alt switch to toggle between the two banks.
Out of the box the C4 offers six dynamic synth tones that range from vintage analogue to the thoroughly modern, just plug in and play, but the real power of the C4 pedal is unleashed with the free Source Audio Neuro desktop editor and app, it's easy to browse from the library of over 1,000 C4 presets or you can create your own from scratch to create the perfect tone, the four independent voices can be routed through two separate processor paths to add drive/distortion and filtering, add additional processing like two independent envelopes, sequencers and then set the mix and mono/stereo output path and save it to the pedal in the desired preset slot.
An explanation of some of the editor's capabilities is as follows:
- Four independent voices, mix together up to four independent voices, assign any of the voices to an oscillator wave shape, monophonic or polyphonic pitch shifter and add intelligent harmoniser, tremolo and filter effects
- Three types of oscillators, mix and match from sine, square and saw shaped oscillators for pure synthesizer tones
- 10+ Distortion types, anything from a subtle drive effect to extremely fuzzy Foldback effects with adjustable drive amount
- 20+ Filter effects, controllable with an envelope follower or independently modulating LFOs, adjustable depth, frequency and Q
- 10+ Envelope followers, different attack, decay, sustain and release characteristics with adjustable speed, sensitivity and gate
- 14 LFO wave shapes, use to control the modulation of filter, vibrato or tremolo effects, shapes include sine, square, sample and hold, saw tooth and more
- Two programmable 16 step sequencers, run two simultaneous patterns, choose from 15+ sequencer patterns or create custom patterns with up to 16 steps across 4 octaves
The pedal has stereo input and output jacks and the C4 responds to MIDI Program Change (PC) and Continuous Controller (CC) messages via its mini USB port, MIDI can be used to engage/disengage the pedal, recall up to 128 presets, move parameters and more. The 3.5 mm 'control input' port allows connection to external control devices such as the Source Audio Tap Tempo Switch, Source Audio Dual Expression Pedal, Neuro Hub and Hot Hand Motion Controller (the tap tempo switch can be used to manually tap in the rate of the LFO, the Dual Expression pedal and Hot Hand can control up to three different parameters). You can connect your phone to use the Neuro mobile app via the phone's headphone jack using the included 1/4" to 1/8" TRS cable and the firmware can be updated via the USB port. The huge scope of the Neuro editor makes the C4 Synth Pedal a powerful pedal and the on board presets and simple controls give it out of the box usability, all wrapped up in a compact and rugged enclosure.
